From Shelter in the Earth to a Doorway to the Stars

Hidden beneath the sun-scorched hills of Matmata, Hotel Sidi Driss is no mosque at all—but a living cave, carved by human hands and time. This troglodyte home, born from Berber ingenuity, would one day echo far beyond the desert, becoming the cinematic heart of the Lars Homestead.

Its story flows like sand and starlight: ancient survival, accidental discovery, and a modern pilgrimage for dreamers.

🏛️ Ancient Roots

Centuries ago, Berber families shaped this dwelling from the rock itself, seeking safety from invaders and relief from the desert's fury. The earth embraced them, creating cool, calm interiors—nature's own air-conditioning, unchanged by time.

🎬 A Chance Encounter with Cinema

In the 1970s, wandering eyes from Hollywood found something extraordinary in southern Tunisia. Abandoned, silent, and sculpted by nature, Sidi Driss offered a ready-made vision of another world.

Its raw simplicity made it the perfect, humble home for a farm boy with a destiny written in the stars.

On Screen

  • The caves appear in Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
  • Returns in Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
  • The sunken courtyard and dining room remain the soul of the filming
  • A devoted French fan helped restore the space to its original cinematic form
  • Murals, props, and quiet details still cling to the walls
