R2-D2
Astromech Droid
The bravest droid in the galaxy. R2-D2's crash landing on Tatooine and capture by Jawas were filmed in the legendary Tunisian dunes that became the Dune Sea of Tatooine.
The Galaxy's Bravest Droid
R2-D2 doesn't speak a word of Basic, yet is the most eloquent character in the saga. His beeps contain urgency, humor, sarcasm, grief, and joy — communicated entirely through sound and body language. He carries the most critical information in the galaxy in his databanks and consistently chooses the most dangerous possible route to deliver it.
🌅 The Tatooine Desert
After the escape pod crash-lands on Tatooine, R2-D2 stubbornly marches toward the "Jundland Wastes," claiming to have a mission. The landscape he rolls through is Gour Beni Mzab, the "Cathedral of the Sands" near Nefta — the most breathtaking dune formation in all of Tunisia.
- Krayt Dragon Bones: The skeleton Threepio passes was also filmed in these dunes, cementing the location as Tatooine's Dune Sea
- Jawa Capture: R2 is stunned and netted by Jawas in the rocky outcrops of the Maguer Gorge area
- First footage ever filmed: R2's and Threepio's dune trek was the first scene shot for the entire Star Wars saga
🔵 Beyond a Droid
"Beep boop whistle — which, depending on context, means everything from "I've got a bad feeling about this" to "you're welcome.""
